Yes, according to this article from the Toronto Daily News, governments and companies may face law suits for their role in global warming. I've already seen global warming skeptics compared with people who claimed cigarettes weren't harmful to health, but this is a new twist. Of course, California has already sued the "big 6" automakers over greenhouse gas emissions.

Isn't it appropriate that polluters be responsible for the clean-up costs of polluting if it had been avoidable? Where I come from, people are respected for taking responsibility for their actions. If cafe standards were not accurately recorded or some pollutant were irresponsibly ignored, then it would absolutely be legal exposure for an auto-maker.
Auto pollution is carcinogenic (forgive the pun). So comparing any irresponsibility, real or imagined, to the tobacco companies is not so strange.
