NOAA - 2006 Warmest Year on Record

In mid-December, NOAA expected 2006 to rank as the third-warmest on record, trailing 1998 and 1934. The unseasonable warmth of December (no state had below-normal temperatures - though as Jesse's blog shows, many states were near normal) and a further evaluation of data, here we stand (image courtesy NOAA):

Andrew Revkin's article in the New York Times on the topic plays up the fact that this is the first time a news release from NOAA has stated that the buildup of greenhouse gases is contributing to warming.

I find this hard to believe...The summer of 2005 was way hotter than '06....I suppose we are factoring in an average for the year?.....And again, stop with the greehouse gases thing...It's gotten mighty old!.....

Patrick McMahon:

I'm fascinated by the NOAA chart of contiguous US average temps. I'm curious as to why there was a maxima in 1934, followed by a cooling trend throughout WW2, a period in which US industry was fully involved with production of war machines. This was before my time, but stories from my parents tell of gas rationing, very strict rationing of metals, etc., indicating a large proportion of the nations's resources were being diverted to the war effort. My intuitive belief is that the nation's leadership and its populace were little concerned with CO2 emissions at this time in history, yet temperatures were falling. What accounts for the cooling trend from about 1950 to 1970? Did ANYONE predict this? If the science of climate prediction is as well sorted out as so many policy makers would have us believe, let them answer these simple questions.

Laura Hannon:

Oiznop - This is a global warming blog. You expect no references to greenhouse gases? Don't hold your breath.

Patrick Schooler:

One thing that I find to be completely disreagarded by many global warming worry warts is the fact that the sun creates virtually all the heat that we receive here on earth. The last 50 to 60 years have been more active solar years. Im all for us cleaning our air and doing a better job keeping our environment clean and I don't doubt that greenhouse gases can have some impact but I think we may want to look at the more likely culprit first.

a search on google for gloabal warming sunspots will show some interesting information as well.

In Wisconsin we could use some globel warming. 2006 summer was a whole lot cooler then 2005. Also right now citrus farmers in Ca. would kick your globel warming freaks butts.

Jordan:

So 2006 was the warmest year on record for the U. S. So what! The U.S. occupies a very small portion of the earth's surface. Consequently, one year of temp data tells us exactly zero about global warming. This is another attempt by the media to frighten people by trumpeting incomplete information.

Next will be banner headlines about some large city setting a record for high temps. And don't hold your breath until they exhibit the same vigor in informing us of record low temps.

Global warming has become a religion pushed by evangelists in the media, in Hollywood, and in our schools. The foolishness exhibited daily is mind boggling. Yet skeptics are treated like heretics were treated in the Dark Ages. The GW zealots fear reason and facts just like the church feared the facts presented by Galileo and Darwin.

Today's proponents of GW will eventually have to abandon their faith when reason and facts prove overwhelmingly that their flat earth crusade is a sham. But mark my word, they will be back with some new cockamamie prediction to strike fear in the hearts of a a gullible public. After all, prophets of all sorts have been making predictions of cataclysmic events and/or the end of the world since early biblical times. Their predictions rarely if ever turn out but the seers are not deterred because they know that their stuff sells. Tragically, policy makers often buy into their garbage and cause tremendous harm. Two examples: (1)hyping the danger of nuclear power and (2)Rachel Carson's indictment of DDT. Nuclear power plants are the cleanest and cheapest source of power generation yet we are not building them. DDT in proper doses has never proven to be harmful to humans but it was banned worldwide and millions of people have died as a result.

So I plead with everyone. Wait for the facts. Do not succumb to the mindless fearmongering of Al Gore and his bedfellows. They just want you to buy their books.
