Warning - Political Content Ahead

Have I mentioned recently that I hate politics? It's true. It's not my thing. But, sometimes it's part of my job to delve into the dark waters of politics and see what surfaces.

So if you have 3 and a half hours to kill and C-Span is your thing, I would point you to yesterday's House Oversight and Government Committee Hearing on Climate Change Research (see the link under "Recent Programs".) This hearing featured testimony from Dr. Drew Shindell of NASA GISS, Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr. of the University of Colorado, Dr. Francesca Grifo, a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists and Mr. Rick Piltz of the Government Accountability Project and former senior associate, U.S. Climate Change Science Program on allegations of political interference with the work of government climate change scientists. If you want to skip the political verbiage, testimony begins at about the 1 hour, 12 minute mark in the video. Additional resources can be found on the House Oversight site, including full witness testimony, which was not presented verbally before the committee.

Dr. Pielke comments on his testimony and also on his overall impressions of the heaving at Prometheus, the science policy blog.

Dr. Grifo and Mr. Piltz testified on an investigative report by UCS and GAP on suppression of federal climate research. Respondents to the UCS survey had experiences ranging from control of content of interviews with media outlets or outright denial of access of the media to the scientists to edits in review of their work which changed the meaning of their scientific findings. Controlling media contacts is understandable and somewhat acceptable - after all, we don't want every employee of the State Department going to the media with their own personal opinions on the Middle East.

Many of the issues of editing were touched on in the UCS report on ExxonMobil's "disinformation campaign" - particularly those involving Philip Cooney, former Chief of Staff for the White House Council of Environmental Quality. Changing the meaning of scientific findings for any reason is completely unacceptable.

Listening to the comments by the various house members on the committee, in most cases it was easy to tell which party each member belonged to simply by their remarks. I love our country and love democracy, but - to come full circle - I hate politics.

wow very surprised at that news feed linked in this article. its almost as if there is a question whether or not it is permissible to call "climate studies" a science.

Jacob:

I was just wondering about two questions.
In Al Gores movie it talks about how the pollution keeps the sun rays from leaving the earth thus staying and heating the atmosphere. If that is true then how did these sun rays get in past the pollution in the atmosphere in the first place?
I am not going to dispute that global earth temperatures have risen on the surface but NASA has said that satellite temperature data shows that the earth has cooled the last couple of decades. Do you believe that is true or is it made up. And if it is true why?

I just wanted to ask some question just please give a civil response.

Oiznop:

Ms. Laura says she hates politics.....That's fine....I hate to say it, but there is no way to avoid it...This issue has been and always will be political, whether you like it or not... Why, you may ask?....Because of those GW proponents who want the Government to impose regulations and laws that affect our lives and freedoms...In an effort to prevent the glaciers from melting...In an effort to control the weather...Pretty arrogant if you ask me...Sorry guys, you can't play God or control nature with more regulations....Sadly, the GW proponets are really not about nature...They are about an agenda....You GW proponents who say you are not political (sure!) and base your claims on science can thank crazy people like Al Gore and his radical crowd for that.....

Mark:

One thing I notice, time and time again, is our skeptical commenters here talk more about their hatred of government than questioning the science. Their disbelief of global warming is stricly based on their political ideology. Sure, they may post articles from one of the four or five skeptics that are out there, like Dr. Lindzen or Dr. Singer, but they offer little other commentary other than calling everyone a "commie" or a "stalinist."

I'm encouraged by the fact that our next President, whether it be Hillary, McCain, or Guiliani, realizes that AGW is real and something must be done. "The debate is over," as John McCain said the other day, and now is time to act.

The extreme right fringe on this issue will always be there, shouting, screaming, yelling at the top of their lungs, but fortunately for us, nobody is listening to them anymore.

Kevbo:

Oiznop... you're too much. You call Al Gore a radical? You're so intent on clinging to your own ignorance... why?

One, Norway is not falling apart. Where do you get this stuff? They have one of the best living standards in the world... higher than us Americans. If you don't like socialism just say so. But don't make stuff up just because you don't like someone else's system. America has far more problems than Norway... open your eyes.

Two, what does personnel freedom have to do with changing public policy in order to correct a problem? Sorry partner, but your ideas about "freedom" do not trump the survival of our planet. Your self love is out of control to the point that you really do believe that everything you want out weighs planetary survival. Amazing. But, sadly, exactly what I expect from an American.

Dave Eaton:

To second Ms H-

I hate politics, too. Putting aside whether you are completely convinced that AGW is the biggest problem facing the planet, what can you expect politicians to do, even if they personally are sure? I'm not asking what they ought to do- I'm asking what one would predict about how they will act.

Maybe the answer to this question should be deferred until one asks this: If global warming is a problem that must be addressed in a hurry, and to do so, it will require massive sacrifices, is there anyone currently in power today that will impose any law, regulation or restriction that causes pain to their constituents?

This, to me, is the most interesting aspect of GW politics. Who among those who say they are convinced AGW is a crisis will have the guts to change things enough to make any difference at all in behavior, knowing that they will likely get tossed out of office next election cycle. What they really believe about global warming will be revealed by how they vote.

My prediction: Politicians understand that people will do things for the environment that are symbolic, to show that they are right-thinking and concerned. Most voters won't stand still for any down-shift in their lifestyle. So congress will focus on meaningless, symbolic measures, call the problem solved, and move on to other things.

Jeff:

Funny, right now it's 4 degrees F and the wind is blowing. Must be global warming....

A case can be made that temps are rising, as they have many times in history. What is flat out unproveable is that mankind is causing it. Laura Hannon is incredibly irresponsible in her comments suggesting that meteorologists that dont march in lockstep should be penalized. Shame on Accu-weather. You have turned into another weather channel.

Graham:

I'd like to know at what point the global climate was considered to be "correct". Presumably, it was when the scientists noticed that it was changing. But we know that the climate has always been changing; it's getting either warmer or cooler all the time. So, when it starts to cool down, what will our successors be told to do to stop it? Get tax breaks for burning more fuel?

Oiznop:

One thing I notice, time and time again, is our skeptical commenters here talk more about their hatred of government than questioning the science.

REPLY: This skeptic does question the science. Because the scientists who put forth this gorg basically have an agenda. I question their intentions because the science is basically junk.

but they offer little other commentary other than calling everyone a "commie" or a "stalinist."

REPLY: The truth hurts, doesn't it?

I'm encouraged by the fact that our next President, whether it be Hillary, McCain, or Guiliani, realizes that AGW is real and something must be done.

REPLY: None of whom will be receiving my vote in 2008 (big surprise there, huh?)....

"The debate is over," as John McCain said the other day, and now is time to act.

REPLY: Don't think so, Senator. This is only the beginning!

The extreme right fringe on this issue will always be there, shouting, screaming, yelling at the top of their lungs,

REPLY: Coming from someone who supports the side that wrote the book on yelling, screaming, and shouting at the top of their lungs (especially with public demonstrations), I find your comment astonishing, Mark. But then again, nothing surprises me....;-D.....

but fortunately for us, nobody is listening to them anymore.

REPLY: Ah yes another one in denial! Au contrare mon ami, as the ones who are not being listened to any longer are the panic mongers on your side of the fence. People are starting to get wise them, especially when we have had sub zero temperatures for the last 2 1/2 weeks. Time to pull your head out of the snow.

Laura Hannon:

Jeff - I did not, have not, will not every suggest that anyone not "marching in lockstep" be penalized. I believe in the scientific process. I also believe it is not right for a political appointee to change a scientist's findings for any reason, political or otherwise.

Oiznop:

Oiznop... you're too much (Thank you). You call Al Gore a radical?

REPLY: Sure do. Have you ever heard this lunatic speak? One of GWBS Speeches I swear he was going to bust a vessel! The man is a radical leftist with nothing better to do but spend his daddy's money on spewing his nonsense at the top of his lungs. Got news for ya, Ozone Man. Yell like a fool all you want. No one is listening, otherwise, you may have been President (oh, oh God no! Thank you for not letting that happen!).

You're so intent on clinging to your own ignorance... why?

REPLY: To you, it's ignorance (again, ladies and gents, they disagree with me so they are ignorant. It never ends with these guys). To me, it's sticking to my guns and what I choose to believe, based on the knowing when I am being BSed to death with constant fear mongering.

One, Norway is not falling apart. Where do you get this stuff? They have one of the best living standards in the world... higher than us Americans. If you don't like socialism just say so.

REPLY: OK I will. I DON'T LIKE SOCIALISM. In any of it's forms. Via liberalism, environmentalism, political correctness, etc. And like many an American, will do what I can to see that it's creeping into American Politics is slowed if not stopped. As for Norway, it's constant appeasement and libeal immigration of radical fundamentalists, (which has been going on for the last 20 years in most European countries) will be the the deathnell for Western EU as a whole. In the interest of multi-culturalism and political correctness. This coupled with low birth rates throughout the continent due to these arrogant attitudes and straying from it's Judeo-Christian roots will only add to this growing problem. Don't believe me? Look to your neighbor to the east (Sweden). Good luck. Cause you guys are going to need it regarding this.

But don't make stuff up just because you don't like someone else's system.

REPLY: Didn't make it up. Do some research. Go to BrusselsJournal.com (that's a European Blog) and become enlightend. Read "While Europe Slept" by Bruce Bawer. Educate yourself.

America has far more problems than Norway... open your eyes.

REPLY: Mine are open, my friend. And they see quite clearly.

Two, what does personnel freedom have to do with changing public policy in order to correct a problem? Sorry partner, but your ideas about "freedom" do not trump the survival of our planet.

REPLY: Ah, the typical Marxist montra. There it is again. For the common good. To heck with your freedoms. We'll take it away for the the survival of the Whales!. How many times do I have to expalin it to you. I don't want any public policy in this country that is going to dictate to me how often I should drive my car, what car I should drive, when I can cut my grass (on an ozone Al action day), and where my tax dollars should go, and how much more I should pay so I can hug my tree. That may be OK for your country, but not mine.

Your self love (THANK YOU) is out of control (Thank you again) to the point that you really do believe that everything you want out weighs planetary survival. Amazing.

But, sadly, exactly what I expect from an American.

REPLY: In the words of the late great Johnny Carson, "Stay Tuned, More to Come" from the USA. Remember, the country that pulled your (Europe's)butt out from the Nazi's grip????.......

I do have to end this by saying that if I am not getting thru to you fear mongers and fraidy cats, that I have at least been entertaining!....;-)..

Oiznop:

One other thing Kevbo:

Norway is not falling apart. Where do you get this stuff? They have one of the best living standards in the world... higher than us Americans.

REPLY: That being the case and considering your distain for America, the why are you not living in Norway? Last I looked, no one is keeping you here in America. I have said it before and I will say it again, you don't like this country, the door is over there! Don't let it hit you where the sun doesn't shine on the way out either.
