Rockin' the Climate
Al Gore has announced a series of concerts around the world to focus on the threat of climate change. The concerts, dubbed Live Earth, will take place in seven cities, one on each of the populated continents plus an additional concert in Asia in July. More than 100 performers are scheduled to appear, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg and Bon Jovi. I read this and felt a little bit like I was having a flashback to the '80s, when Live Aid, Farm Aid and other large scale benefit concerts were born. The next thought that crossed my mind, as I read the list of performers, was what does Tipper think?

Concerts to combat Global Warming in July! How clever, ozone man. When there is a 90% chance that it will be hot outside! How convenient. Can't put one over on old Al. What does Tipper think? I would not be surprised if she were hitting the bottle more frequently than usual these days!.....:D......Also, ask youself this. How much good did those Live Aid, We Are The World, Farm Aid, Hands Across America, touchy feely events from the 1980s actually do?....My guess is, not much....But, heck, that money had to go somewhere, didn't it????.....

I not so sure that this would do anything other than raise awareness. I could hear the 20-something crowd now "we can save the planet if we switch to florescent lights and drive hybrid cars" and not have a clue how to do either one or why. A week later, the lessons would be a distant memory.
If there is money involved, what will it be used for? To buy some Wind Mills or is it purely for public awareness advertising? How many participants will drive there SUVs or mega horse power trucks to the event?

What will this cost in carbon offsets?
Could someone smarter than I calculate the cost of Airline transportation, Limo transportation, Hotel room, Food, Electriciy at the concert, Police vehicles, Cleanup.? The List Goes on and on.
Al Gore is wrapped up in his own self promotion I don't think even winning the presidency would quence his thirst.
Did I just hear Frank Zappa chuckle?

Thats my thought as well. Every one of those 'rock stars' will be flying in on a private jet, spewing more CO2 into the air for that one trip than an average SUV driver will put into the air over a number of years.
I'd be far more impressed with his dedication if Al Gore and the other climate hucksters would instead pledge never to step onto a private or chartered plane again, EVER.

Could we *please* stop ridiculing things we don't agree with and just get on with trying to do something about a serious problem? You, your children, your friends, are in for a very tough ride. Never mind the muddied politicized waters around the science, check out the weather, not just in your neighborhood, but around the world. Today, 120,000 are homeless in Mozambique *before* cyclone Favio hit (130 mph). Imagine facing a level 3 hurricane in a refugee tent after losing all your belongings, dependent on the kindness of strangers. But of course they're not your neighbors ...
But I totally agree about all the private jets!

REPLY: That, my friend, is NOT going to happen. Again, hypocrisy, just busting out all over!

REPLY: NO! Absolutely not. Once again, another fear monger who doesn't see the hypocrisy in all of this. These people are NOT above criticism. As long as Ozone Al and his band of phoney celebrities continue to do these sort of things, I for one will continue to ridicule. And it's always the same old line with you people. For the children. We're in for a tough road to hoe. Stop with the fear mongering and the guilt trips about the children already! That bowl of soup doesn't hold up anymore, at least with anyone who has common sense!

Oh, one more thing:
check out the weather
REPLY: When last looked, it was 21 degrees and snowing where I am at. With predicted freezing rain for the weekend (just wonderful!). What's your point? As far as other places, last week it was 55 degrees in Florida. Yes that's right, in Florida. Again, I ask, just what are you trying to say?

Raising money to combat global warming is bad, but spending $6 billion per month on the collosal failure known as the Iraq War is money well-spent.
That's sarcasm, by the way.

Mark,
you can't win a debate by swithcing subjects.
Like live-aid and other mega-philanthropist concerts, they end up spending more than they make.
Imagine all of the natural recources that go into a world wide mega-event such as this.
An argument that they would bring awareness to AGW would be a moot point. They used more carbon than they needed to and are actually being hypocritcal

Susan's right, we need to do something about the world's serious problems but that would leave AGW out in the cold. Here's an article that will help put things in perspective.

I regret to tell you that this concert may not live up to its economical purposes. But it would still be an useful way of raising people awareness.
Is it political propaganda? May be, but at least, it makes it clear that a few of us care about the world.
Emiliano.
PS: It's not our children or grandchildren! It's you, me, everyone. I'm just 17...

REPLY: OK, Let's try this again. Thank you Mark for proving just what you and what your opninions are all about. Not about the earth. Not about the environment. Not about the trees and the polar bears. No sir, you are all about politics. And an agenda. You just proved it to the world by making this statement. Not to mention that you are all about a vitriolic rage against the current administration and it's policies. I thank you for proving my point that the global warming arguement is nothing more than this.
It's not our children or grandchildren! It's you, me, everyone. I'm just 17...
REPLY: Another guilt trip, E? Sorry, my friend. For some of us, it doesn't work. And your statement about "not the children, or grandchildren, but you, me and everyone, whether you realize it or not, is just what the leftist "care about the world" Global Warming politicos want you to believe. I choose not to.....
Posted by Oiznop | February 26, 2007 7:43 AM
I just laugh at the comments that say "that's what the leftist care about", or "you're defending Marxism".
I wonder, How would you live in a world that cannot meet your needs. I mean, I'm not saying it has to be like what people used to dream of in the 60's. But, people care about money making, right? Which is not bad, because otherwise there's no other way to survive. But how can you make money when spending millions after a disaster takes place? How would you make money out of a flooding-prone farm? How would you deal with never-ending draughts? You wouldn't be able to produce goods, factories wouldn't have raw materials to satisfy our needs, you wouldn't even be able to feed your kids.
And it's not a guilt trip: It's just facing the truth; which is something that skeptics refuse to do.

But how can you make money when spending millions after a disaster takes place?
REPLY: It's been done, and people still make money, at least in this country.
How would you make money out of a flooding-prone farm?
REPLY: Just how many "flooding-prone farms" are there?
How would you deal with never-ending draughts?
REPLY: Hasn't happened. More fear, gloom and doom....
You wouldn't be able to produce goods, factories wouldn't have raw materials to satisfy our needs, you wouldn't even be able to feed your kids.
REPLY: Yes you are correct, but none of this has happened. And based on the track record of the predictions made by the fear mongers out there, they proabably will not. Are more regulations are your answer to preventing these concerns that may or may not happend? to control the weather? E, you are 17 and you are not yet wary of the world yet. I give you credit for having opinions on things. But you are at an impressionable age. When you get older, you will discover that not everything that is fed to you by the media or some over-rated drugged up actor, rock star or politician is the truth. Especially when it has been proven before (30+ years ago from the Global Cooling boogie men) that these things are nothing more than myth, and is all playing on people's fear and emotions. A typical ploy from the political left.

I just keep on laughing, Ozinop! Do you think I can be influenced by what Al Gore says? Do you think I care about Di Caprio taking care of polar bares? C'mon you're wrong. I may be young, but not guilleable. If that's a problem with most teenagers in the US, I'm sorry, but that's not my case.
Yes, you still make money... but how many of you? Ask in Lousiana or in the Deep South if they're making money (Advice: Don't go to an insurance company; sure they are ;)

REPLY: OK I will....The floor is open for anyone in the deep south/Louisiana...Who survived Hurricane Katrina....Who is not blaming the weather or their personal woes on George Bush.....Are you making money??...Did you pick yourself up after the disasters brought on by "Global Warming" and move on?....Or did you become a victim of the evil imperialist that is the U.S. and A?...The floor is yours!.......(can't wait to see the responses...Oh a word of advise....be careful how you answer...you may be percieved as a bumpkin idiots by our liberal friends on this blog!...;-D....)......

Oh you'll never ever understand what people think. Plus, I don't think the USA is an evil empire. Come on Ozinop, open your eyes. I've got nothing personal against Bush. You're being close-minded.
Anyways, I won't change the way you think, nor will you the way I do.
Only time will tell who's right.
