« NOAA Introduces CarbonTracker | Main | China Likely to Take the Lead »

Sweet!

This is almost completely off topic, but it is such an interesting concept that I had to write about it. Portable electronics powered by sugar. Yep. Plain ol' table sugar, dissolved in water. Fruit juice, even. The new, biodegradable battery could replace lithium ion batteries in laptop computers, cell phones, iPods and other electronic devices.

Carbonated beverages don't work very well, but any other sugar-based liquid - including plant sap and sweetened drink mix, can power the fuel cell, which can already run a handheld calculator. Hey, my cell phone's dead. Please pass the Kool-Aid.

Kind of reminds me of the "potato clocks" that we built in elementary school. They ran off of the starch in potatoes.

John:

This reminds me of the 'Mr. Fusion' home energy generator from Back to the Future
No more messing with plutonium to generate the 1.21 gigawatts to run the flux capacitor and achieve time travel! But where can you get a reliable DeLorean these days?

John:

The problem I see with this technology is we get our electronics dependent on sugar and the next thing we know miniaturization is a thing of the past. So much for portable, light weight electonics! I say no to this technology, keep our electronic away from this unhealthy dietary choice. :-)

Julie:

The main problem I forsee with this is.....ANTS. Could you imagine ants crawling all over your electronics trying to get to the sugary goodness? They're a pain to deal with now if one gets in your house.

That sounds Great .. this will help us all..
