India to G8: Count Us Out

India participated in last week's G8 Summit in Germany as one of a group of developing nations. Discussions on cutting greenhouse gas emissions were met with a blunt rejection by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who told reporters, "We said we have not come here to discuss targets or accept internationally enforced targets on us."

India is among the world's leaders in carbon dioxide emissions, but with the world's second-largest population at over one billion people, per capita CO2 production is low, only 23 percent of the global average and just 4 percent of the U.S. average.

Patrick Henry:

It is disturbing seeing the "per capita" CO2 production statistic used over and over again. Measured vs. industrial output, US CO2 production is lower than the EU and much lower than India.

We shouldn't use India's massive overpopulation, poverty and low productivity as a reason to beat up on the US.

Brian Doherty:

would a per capita figure fit in with or be akin to an intensity style of analysis od CO2 contributions??

Oiznop:

That's ok, India. You don't have to cut your emissions and be a team player on the world's grid iron. There's enough anti-progress/anti-capitalist guilt and self hatred in the U.S. and A. to more than compensate for your lack of participation. Isn't that right Mark, Tom and Susan?

The Denier Strikes Again!

Per capita CO2?!?!?

What the $^#(@%##%) !!!!

So let's turn our libido loose in the US, open our borders and bring that per capita value down!

It bugs the daylights out of me. Having seen first hand the environmental destruction created by indusdtry, irresponsible agriculture, etc in the ex-Soviet Union, it bothers me that we here in the US, who have some of the cleanest manufacturing process in the world, are constantly maligned and told we have to improve while other countries, citing this "per capita" horse pucky, spew, not only CO2 but other pollutants into the atmosphere and get away with it...

Augh....

Starwise:

I read that United Arab Emirates surpasses U.S. CO2 emissions per capita, but it sure hasn't been reported that way.
