Major CEOs Joining Global Warming Fight
According to an article from the Christian Broadcasting Network, a large number (160) of CEOs from major companies are teaming up in the battle against global warming. A few of the more notable companies taking part are Exxon, Walmart, Dupont and Peabody Energy, which by the way is the largest coal producer in the country. The group states that "collective actions" should be taken now to reduce greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. One example of this effort was Walmart, which has cut fuel usage in their delivery trucks, making them 15% more efficient. The company hopes to reach 25% by late next year. The company believes that the annual savings in carbon dioxide emissions annually will be equal to taking 68,000 cars off the road.
A side note from the moderator..... please "try" to keep the comments focused on the blog subject. I know sometimes that is hard to do, and I understand that, but a lot of recent comments have drifted away from the main subject and I have received a number of concerns about this. Overall, I think we have had some great discussion in the month that I have been moderating this blog and I thank everyone for participating and voicing their opinions. Brett.

Good job, Walmart. I wonder if this effort is to cut CO2 emissions and help the environment or cut back on fuel usage and help the bottom line. Great PR, though.

What!? WHAT!?! Surely, these CEOs must be communists masquerading in disguise. Or maybe they were sent from Venezuela to turn our corporations into state-run enterprises, ruin our economy, and revert us to the Dark Ages, thus allowing Hugo Chavez to invade us and take us over.
It's all a conspiracy, guys, don't you see?

Ah, more fodder for the panic mongers here I see. And I am sure that they will be on here with their "SEE, SEE, SEE, YOU EVIL DENIERS! BIG BUSINESSES SAY IT'S INEVITABLE." Let me beat them to it by saying if these companies want to jump on the GW (farce) bandwagon, then they are FREE to do so. Not a the behest of mandatory Government regulations and taxes. If they feel it won't hurt their bottom line, that is their business. We shall see when they have to report to their shareholders! What a great way to say to the world that "we are not these evil profiteers" that those who "go to bat for the little people" think they are. More PR stunts to make themeselves look good? Neee-ya (crunch, crunch, crunch), could be! Whatever floats your boat.

There's an article in Aspen Daily News about Gore talking to tehcnology Innovators. http://www.aspendailynews.com/article_20762
What gets me is the following quote and it shows how ignorant he is of the Sun and how he uses political techniques to try and get folks fired up:
"Gore advised the audience to compare the blue orb of the Earth to Venus, where daytime temperatures reach 867 degrees Fahrenheit and it rains sulphuric acid. The two planets have the same amount of carbon, Gore explained, but Venus' just happens to be in the atmosphere, while most of the Earth's is still locked underground. "The habitability of this planet for human beings really is at risk," he said. "
Al, it's 867 degrees because its also CLOSER to the SUN. You have a message fine, you want companies and CEO's to think and live green fine, being green isn't necessarily bad, but please stop playing games with people's heads and most of all stop pretending to be a scientist-you have a tough enough time trying to be a politician people take seriously.

The quickest way for US manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions in the US if to outsource thier manufacturing overseas. In this respect, they've done very well as $4 trillion dollars of manufacturing and services work has been sent to China and India since 1995.
The UK has one of the lowest CO2 emissions in the EU, but they've also moved most of thier manufacturing to Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. You will find very little manufacturing jobs in the UK when compared to the 1970s and 1980s.
In this respect the CEO's are doing thier jobs by limiting regulatory exposure of their corporations. The net effect has been not only the outsourcing of our jobs, but also our pollution to developing nations. Last May, China became the largest emitter of CO2 in the world.

To add to Phish's comment Re: Dumb Gore, Mars' atmosphere is also almost entirely CO2, yet that planet is a FROZEN wasteland; why ? Because it is FARTHER from the sun........
In other words, it's ALL about the sun, and despite what Lockwood, Hansen and other AGW alarmists spout, quantitative solar science is still in its infancy, and it will be many decades before scientists have a good grasp of the sun's true effects on our climate.

These 160 CEOs are smart business people. They recognize the escalating costs of energy and the importance of projecting a positive public image. This is not altruism; it's good business.
This article from Der Spiegel provides a good analysis of what this is truly all about:

Folks, we have to let the businesses that we do business with know that making quality and readily available products is why we do business with them not because they cave to the AGW Church's demands. I think it's great that Wal-Mart is saving that much gas. As demand eases the price will go down.
UPS is installing electric motors on their fleet of trucks that are only used to get the trucks up to speed to increase fuel efficiency. They estimate a 20% improvement overall. That is tremendous when you think about how many miles they drive each year.
There are some good things that are coming out of the GW scare like more efficient engines, the drive to create alternate energy producers, and hopefully a better understanding of our planet and how we can make sure our children enjoy their lives as much if not more than we have. But making good choices for bad reasons will eventually lead to making bad choices.
We have to campaign to wrestle the control of our futures back from these idiots and the sheep that follow them. If we allow ourselves to be shoved in bad direction because we are a crowd we have no one but ourselves to blame. An effective method of helping people who are on the fence is to ask them to research GW a bit themselves and answer their questions with honesty.

Nothing wrong in saving energy but "fight" against Global Warming gives the topic a dignity it doesn't deserve.
How about many CEOs have joined the Cult?
or
Global Warming Claims moved to the Religion Page?

I am skeptical about large energy companies joining these groups. I am more inclined to think that they are keeping tabs on corporate sentiment more than anything else.
Most Americans can take small steps to lower their energy costs and carbon footprint which would make a huge impact overall. I just replaced about a dozen light bulbs with flourescents. They are cooler and use about 1/5 of the electricty.

These CEO's are doing this for one reason and one reason only, to bolster the bottom line. Walmart saves money on gas, good for them. They can now wrap themselves in the "green" shroud and attract even more customers. Make no mistake, if this wouldn't produce profits they wouldn't do it. Saying it's because of global warming is as dishonest as a store saying they're open late "for your convenience". It's not for my convenience, it's so they can make money! But somehow them running an ad saying they were open late just to make money wouldn't garner much in the way of customers...LOL.

Yep, CEO's can do as they please.
Frankly, this is exactly what was opined on previous threads: businesses will adapt to appease the popular concerns of the marketplace whether or not the concerns are factually accurate. If it's popular do what you can to promote how your company works to "fix" the problem. We've been told that without government intervention, nothing like this would occur.
Remember back a bunch of years ago when McDonalds changed from styrofoam box sandwich containers to paper? It was solely to reduce litter that was seen as long-lasting and big issue at that time. Paper wrappers were touted as taking up less space in a landfill and easier to break down. They switched to recycled content boxes to be on top of the desire to use post-consumer goods more recently. MMMMMM fries!

These changes are nice, and I applaud corporations for taking an initiative (finally). However, these are very small changes which, if this is all we see, is not going to make any dent in carbon emissions. We have to remember that the market does two things and only two things: 1) It looks at the short term and 2) makes profit. That is why long-term environmental concerns cannot be solved by the market because it moves so slowly. Anything beyond a five year window is too far out for a corporation to think about

Ok, if business with their CEOs take actions to do something about "global warming", they're only doing it for profit and public appeasement (which is kind of the purpose of a capitalist business) and they are evil. If business with their CEOs do NOT take any actions related to "global warming", they are just interested in profit and public appeasement, and they are evil. The majority of Americans work for some type of business, whether large corporations or self-employed, so we must also be evil. I think the corporations with their CEOs are doing these actions because they want to make a profit (thank goodness) and they will be getting subsidies from the government (our taxes)for various "global warming" pork, and they would rather operate in a capitalistic, "free" market then have the current economic-theory-challenged government dictate a bunch of moronic socialistic, nonsense laws about so-called AGW. Based on the alternative of government dictating how we should live and controlling our lives and damaging the economy and the environment, having CEOs and business rise to the challenge, whether or not it is totally profit motivated (who cares), is a far better solution if we are going to address pollution and "global warming". P.S. I threw away my fluorescent bulbs and put back in my incandescent bulbs. I do not like the light from fluorescent bulbs. I tried but no can do. I also will never drive a butt-ugly midget Prius type car. I'm keeping my Ford 250 truck and my large Acura sedan until they come up with a large, cute, efficient vehicle.

Follow the money. Smart businessmen recognize that governments will begin to cave into public pressure and want to get out ahead of the wave. BP is a great example of a company that made a commitment to the first wave and they have been able to cloak the company in an environmental light, despite the fact that the company continues to profit from CO2-producing products. I think that this represents a nod to the inevitable short-term, not an acceptance that CO2 is responsible for this latest global warming era.

Darren,
I remember the styrofoam change at McD's too, but oddly enough my large drink came in a styrofoam cup yesterday. Guess now the hype is off, it is back to old habits. Kind of like the AGW thing will be in 20 years.

I have dibs on using Walmart for my "carbon offset". That way I can keep my pickup and be like the ecocelebrities that preach the good word while jetting around the globe to one of their many large homes. :)

If a compromise is simply paying lip service, then no, there needs to be more done. Much more.
And it will be done, despite the efforts of the anti-science, anti-environment crowd to preserve the status quo.
