Flesh-eating Disease and Global Warming
The sometimes fatal flesh-eating disease, otherwise known as Leishmaniasis is on the rise, and scientists from the University of Hull are attributing this increase to global warming.
According to the article from ScienceDaily, Leishmaniasis is caused by a parasite transmitted from the bite of the sand fly, which is usually only found in tropical climates. The concern from the researchers is that rising temperatures will allow these sand flies to expand into more countries, and perhaps even through Europe. In addition to global warming, the increased military presence in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan mean that this horrible disease is affecting more people than ever before, according to lead researcher Dr. Ross Boyle.
Boyle and his team are currently working on an improved treatment for Leishmaniasis.

Wonderful theory. One minor problem though is that temperatures have not risen in the tropics, except perhaps a little in the "Siberian Tropics."

I hope they get lots of funding paid for by tax money, just because they used the term "global warming."

Any idea what part of the US could become infected with Sand Flies?
Could it be the midwest where a brutal heat wave is underway?
An oppressive two-week heat wave in the Southeast and Midwest has already killed at least 44 people.
In Memphis, the city's heat index -- a measure that factors in humidity to describe how hot it feels -- has broken 100 every day since June 27!
How is that for GLOBAL WARMING?
Keep in mind, that as Arctic Sea ice continues to reach record low levels and Carbon Dioxide levels keep rising, that heat waves like this will become the norm.
Think it will cool off at Night?
Sorry, but no.
Greenhouse gases work by keeping heat trapped in. It is not the sun that is getting warming, but the inability of the atmosphere to dissiptate heat at night that is the culprit.
Read all about the science of GLOBAL WARMING at the IPCC website.
http://ipcc-wg1.ucar.edu/wg1/wg1-report.html
Global Warming is dramatically expanding the range of all types of tropical diseases.
Sad to see that this happening.
Also, how about monster hurricanes?
Dean is Cat 4 hurricane, maybe it will be a 5. The number of hurricanes is not expected to increase with Global Warming, but the intensity will.
Cat 4 hurricanes used to be rare, now they are becoming more and more common. 150 mph winds does a lot of damage.

Andrew,
I hate to rain on your "sky is falling" parade, but according to NOAA, temperatures in Tennessee have been declining at a rapid rate of -0.14F per decade.
http://climvis.ncdc.noaa.gov/tmp/graph-Aug1915:07:532988891601.gif
This despite Al Gore's best efforts to heat the place up with his private jets and 20,000 suare foot house.
If that link doesn't work, go to http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/cag3/tn.html
select Period Annual First year to display 1930, Last year to display 2007
click on submit.
Surprisingly, it is not unusual for temperatures to be hot in Tennessee in July and August.

Thats it. Im getting sick of this. Everyone blams everything on global warming. If any event happens (tornadoe, tropical, snow, heat, cold, drough, flood, car braking down, dam breaking, car accident, chicken salad, crime) its global warming. Heck, my favorite pair of shoes just got chewed up by my dog, is that a sign of global warming? No, my dog ate my shoes.
Its funny. After Katrina everyone wanted to find someone to blam. Bush, New Orleans mayor,FEMA, god, the Irish, and the Brady bunch. They wouldn't take the blam so they said global warming. Poor global warming took the hit when it was NATURE.

This is the only flesh eating disease I'm aware of, and it's a virus:

Andrew, be sure to tell us the number of death's due to the cold this winter if you'd be so kind please. And wind shear will decrease the intensity in case you haven't heard:

Mark,
Cat 4 hurricanes used to be rare
Eighteen Category 4 hurricanes hit the US between 1851 and 2004. All but three were prior to 1960.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastdec.shtml
The busiest decade for hurricanes was 1940-1950.
The people who died in Galveston in 1900 would be turning in their graves about this AGW nonsense and attempted rewrite of history.

Patrick, good point. I think I will apply for a grant to study Pythons that are now getting a foothold in the Everglades. I can make casual mention of the snakes being released by their owners but blame global warming to give it credibility.
On the subject of huuricanes, being a Florida resident for many years, one observation I have noted is how quick they are to name a storm. The test equipment used now is far more accurate, there are better and more satellites and the hurricane hunter flights are more frequent. Storms in '02, '95 and the no name storm in the 80s were far worse than many of the named storms of today.

For the true believers, everything is caused by global warming. Here is a truely serious issue reported a few weeks back. Global warming is causing a shortage of prostitutes in Bulgaria:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2007/08/02/global-warming-causes-drop-supply-bulgarian-prostitutes
and if you really want to read about all the bad stuff that is just around the corner, (Its always just about to happen, why is that) read this letter from James Hansen. The poor man has really gone over the edge. He is seriously bordering on some sort of breakdown if these statements are any indication of his mental state. Get the Poor man some vallium for Christs sake.

Kind of reminds me of the wild eyed street corner preachers that screem "Repent ye sinners, lest ye die".... The end is nie...

With a name like Boyle no wonder he is talking about flesh-eating diseases. I know I woke up this morning wondering the same thing about those darn sand flies. Crush the sand flies. I just knew global warming was going to make them flourish. This sounds more like an article I read in the National Enquirer, and that is why I like it. Did you say heatwave in the summer time in the South? Now that is weird.

Dr Ross Boyle concludes, "It's really exciting to be involved in research which could improve the lives of millions of people suffering the effects of this debilitating infection. Translation, "It's really unbelievable to be making this much money off of global warming. The fact that people are this gullable is truley exciting and rewarding."

Wow,
scare tactics at its best. Sand fleas... huh. How bout the millions crossing our border every day carrying god knows what with them. That is an invasion to be worried about. TB, small pox, the plague, those are diseases to get amped about.

Think it will cool off at Night?
Sorry, but no.
Sorry Andrew but you are incorrect again. Nobody goes by heat index or realfeel but actual temps. If you want to go by that Mt. Mitchell had -65 in April of this year. Also you said it doesn't cool off at night and I am using Memphis as an example since you wanted to use them yourself. They are currently averaging 1 degree below normal for the low temp. for the month. Sorry dude.

Let us get this right.
A MID AUGUST heat wave claims 44 lives.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/19/heat.wave.ap/index.html
And, the response from deniers is to point out
that the temperature for JULY was below average.
JULY
AUGUST
There is a difference.
Likewise with hurricanes.
There has been an significant increase.
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/hurricane-climatology.html
http://www.pewclimate.org/global-warming-basics/facts_and_figures/impacts/storms.cfm
The total number is not just up, but way up since 1995.

Andrew,
I see you weren't interested in the declining temperature trends for the last 70 years in Tennessee. The last week and a half is of course more significant than the previous 3,500 week trend.

Andrew read again. I never talked about July. I am talking about August. Average nighttime lows are 1 degree below normal in Memphis to this day. Also hurricane count should be up for the next 20-30 more years. I grew up in Florida and lived their 38 years and never saw hurricane force winds ever in Orlando from 1961-1999. Why you ask, because hurricane activity was at a lull. Weather and climate changes due to cycles not CO2 or man.
