How about Fertilizing the Oceans?

A scientist from New Mexico Tech proposes that fertilizing the oceans could offset some of the global warming caused by greenhouse gases.

How would this work? Ocean growing plankton would thrive from the fertilization process, giving off more dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which when emitted into the atmosphere, would help spur cloud formation. The increased cloud cover would help reduce some of the solar heating at the surface which would counteract some of the global warming.

This idea seems like a big stretch to me in terms of workability, as they would probably need a tremendous amount of fertilizer to cover such a large area in order to produce the necessary amount of DMS. How often would you need to fertilize? How much energy would they need to produce the fertilizer and distribute it across the oceans? Also, how would the fertilizer impact other ocean life? Now I think I understand why Wingenter has struggled to win any funding to further pursue this idea......suspected cost of additional research and the potential huge cost of executing the project. Still, I give Wingenter and his colleagues credit for coming up with the interesting idea. Solutions to many of our problems must first start with ideas.

What do you think of this idea and some of the others discussed in this article from
The Houston Chronicle?

Andrew:

This idea may actually have some merit and additional benefits.

The Oceans are becoming over fished and depleted. Possibly, the fertilizer could help turn that around as well.

I still believe that cutting emissions thru improved less travel, car pooling and efficiency improvement are the best approaches. Also, easting less hamburger in the diet is good not just for ones health, but also the climate.

Carbon sequestering is probably too expensive and spreading aerosols in the atmosphere could have negative side effects.

Do not believe that giant mirrors in orbit will be pratical at all.

Education is still key. The more people understand the problem, the more likely they are to take action. Do not necessarily need Governments to make laws or taxes. Just need people to take actions on their own.

Fertilizer runoff causes algae blooms, and some research seems to indicate in has a lot to do with red tide. New Mexico Tech needs to go to plan B whatever that is.

Darren M:

I don't see why you would want to block out the sun. I am more afraid of a cooling climate than a warming one. It's not right to play god, or "mother nature".

In northwest Jersey we have not had one record high temperature yet this summer, but we have had a lot of record lows. Today we got up to 57.3 degrees. This is the third record low high in the past month! Where I live we hit over 90 only 4 times this year, that's just not "normal". LOL, what is "normal" anyway? Earth has no "normal" sea ice, or "normal" temperature", or "normal" climate. We will just have to adapt like we have for thousands of years.

Hey, I just want to bring up one little thing. Since 1934 is "hottest" year on record is Gore going to update his little slide show, or will he ignore proven science? I love to see a great lie start to fall apart.

Aram Paquin:

Brett,
the idea of fertilizing the oceans, I admit, sounds silly at first glance but is it really? Oil tankers depart US ports daily after having dumped their loads. Presumably, they're empty. The port facilities from which they depart are, for the most part, located near heavily populated metropolitan areas. Large numbers of people means large amounts of effluent from sewerage systems. Why not pump the stuff into the empty tanks for later dumping in selected oceanic areas. Tanker captains might appreciate having the tanks at least partially filled for ballast. Before any large scale implementation of such a plan is begun, however, there should be more in depth studies and limited trials to make sure the expected benefits would outweigh any detrimental effects.

Reply, I was not implying that it was silly. I am not in a position to judge this scientific process, since I am not an expert in the fields dealing with plankton and their release of gas into the atmosphere, but I was concerned about the economic feasibility. I could just as easily be wrong as well, I will give you that. Brett.

Darren:

Maybe the Goreacle could give a few speeches from a boat out in the middle of the oceans. He spouts quite a lot of fertilizer during those talks. Of course, the question must be asked, are plankton less productive when asleep?

Come to think of it, Goreacle would not take kindly to this idea as it may lower the take from his carbon credit scam, oops I mean business.

How about the coldest day in NYC in august since 1911.

Wow, this is scary. What unexpected side effects might jump out and bite us in the ass from knee jerk reactions like these;
Just another solution for a non problem.
Have a look at this Blog. It is a list of Peer Reviewed papers all showing that CO2 is not the boogie man. We always hear the cries for Peer Reviewed sources, well this is a pretty impressive list. Worth a look even for the AGW faithful. Looks like AGW is on it last desperate legs.

Herschel:

Brett--Source of fertilizer solved. It will cost nothing to produce, is readily available and is stacking up in great quanties. All we need to do is man the shovels. I'm speaking of AGW BS. Hope it doesn't kill the plankton.

Mark:

jon,

How about the hottest and driest August on record in Raleigh, NC?

See, I can post links about weather too.

Patrick Henry:

Moose flatulence is the real cause of global warming.

Norway's Moose Population in Trouble for Belching
The poor old Scandinavian moose is now being blamed for climate change, with researchers in Norway claiming that a grown moose can produce 2,100 kilos of methane a year -- equivalent to the CO2 output resulting from a 13,000 kilometer car journey.

Reply, yes, I saw that too Patrick. I thought about doing a post about it, but we have covered similar things with livestock. A lot more livestock out there than moose. Brett

george naytowhowcon:

YIKES! More bad ideas. Perhaps people should examine the fifty plus (more probably) weather modification programs already in progress. There is already a great deal of interest in what many people call Chemtrials. See this site on artificial clouds:
http://www.newruskincollege.com/gorbachevbushartificialcloudsinstitutenewruskincollegecom/id10.html The introduction of particalised metal oxides into the atmosphere is detailed at great length by Dr. Edward Teller. The problem is artificial (and natural) cloud cover insulates the radiant heat closer to the surface than does clear skies that permit daytime heating to radiate to space as nighttime cooling. Clouds act as blankets.
The other weather project to question is what the impact of directed microwave energy to the Ionisphere has to do with weather events, The HAARP project run out of University of Alaska is only one such Ionisphere Heater, there are many. This is Directed Energy Freaquency Modulation of our atmosphere, what damage is done to birds and bees we might ask! And to what end are these guys heating the ions to plasma states doing?
Geo-Engineering is stupid...and so is polluting excessiviely. We can all do better than permitting so much waste of resources and energy.

woodNfish:

I am completely against these idiots tampering with natural processes that work well enough when left alone. Wingenter and the rest of his technocrat fools (that includes algore) just want more funding no matter what harm is done to the rest of us.

Andrew, do you have any proof the oceans are being over fished? Do you even live near an ocean? I'm willing to bet you've been reading too much nonsense from the WWF and Sierra Club. Also, hamburger is good for you - eat more of it.

Also, you aren't interested in education, you are only interested in indoctrination. It has obviously worked on you.

Palm Grower:

What the...? Here in Florida we are trying to prevent fertilizer from getting into the canals that lead to the lagoons that lead to the ocean. This excess fertilizer wreaks havoc on the ecosystem. So now should we be encouraging runoff? I'm sure the people with over fertilized lawns on the barrier islands will be very happy to hear this news. Wow, and to think of all the money we'll be saving. No more programs and people will need to be dedicated to preventing the runoff. Awesome, what a great idea!!!

woodNfish:

Brett,

Is there a reason why you are not posting my comments?

Reply, I just did. Brett.

Patrick Henry:

How about the hottest and driest August on record in Raleigh, NC?

2,000 weather stations. 100 year record. On average, every August, twenty weather stations in the US will record their "hottest August ever."

High heat also goes with low humidity from low precipitation, so one would expect hot and dry to be coupled.

It is amazing how AGW religious devotees can see Armageddon instead of simple statistics.

jon:

Mark,

you never answered my last post in the carbon tax blog. I guess the truth hurts..ehh?

Mark:

What question?

If you would like to make a moreinformed comment than from what you have gleamed from a news article, please read the actual paper first.
Thanks,
OWW

Mark Wiener:

Wearisome arguments over climate change are a smokescreen for varied interests to obscure a very real, thoroughly documented and correctable set of problems: air and water pollution.

As these relate to the status quo, they are in excess. As they relate to potential increased global warming, the pollution will increase. As they relate to potential global cooling, the pollution will increase.

The solutions are building energy efficiency through more appropriate architecture, green roofs as in Chicago, white warehouse and parking lot roofs as in George Bush Intecontinental Airport rental car garages, Houston, TX and efficient residential architecture as in President Bush's Crawford TX ranch house. The solutions are Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicles coupled with vehicle to grid technology supplemented by Photovoltaics. PV power into cars is less expensive than $3/gallon liquid fuel.
Finally, clean up ALL the GRANDFATHERED, OLD COAL fired power plants. SOLAR WATER HEATERS are also cost effective.

Creates new jobs and a better world. How hard is that?
