« That Sinking Feeling | Main | Oil Giant expects increasing CO2 Emissions for Years to Come »

Increasing Demand for Cheap Coal

While the price of oil continues to skyrocket, the price of coal continues to fall, making it increasingly attractive to consumers across the globe. In the article from Bloomberg, the coast of a ton of coal is now down to $47 and European utilities are now willing to pay 50 dollars to ship it across the Atlantic. About ten years ago the cost of coal and oil was about the same, but now, West Texas Intermediate crude is five times more expensive than coal.

Coal use worldwide has grown 27% since 2002, which is three times faster than crude, and the three biggest U.S. coal companies forecast the largest increase in exports in 20 years.

"Coal is by far the cheapest fuel because there's no price on how much damage it causes," said John Holdren, a Harvard University professor of environmental science and director of the Woods Hole Research Center in Falmouth, Massachusetts. "Unless you get policies to put a price on carbon dioxide and other emissions, no other plants can compete." Five months ago Al Gore said the U.S. should adopt a "complete moratorium" on new coal-fed power plants unless all of the CO2 from them can be buried underground. Based on what is going on now, it seems like Gore's proposal has little chance of getting enacted anytime soon.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, more than 1,000 coal-fed power plants will be built in the next 5 years, mostly in China and India. "If those 1,000 plants get built without any controls on carbon emissions, we will careen into unmanageable changes in our climate," said Holdren.

Patrick Henry:

Sounds like Al Gore is pushing to make America fall behind China with unilateral economic disarmament. He must still be upset that he didn't get to play President.

I was reading through the plans for the massive Nunn Uranium leach mine in Colorado tonight. It will very likely contaminate the water supply for hundreds of thousands of people along the Front Range with deadly toxic radioactive isotopes. All for "clean" nuclear power to save us from that horrible CO2. I guess Rocky Flats didn't make enough of a radioactive mess here and they are intent on rendering everything north of Denver to the Wyoming border uninhabitable.

Andrew:

Maybe if we raised the price of coal exports, then China and India would not burn as much of it.

Reply: That didn't seem to work in the U.S. (less gasoline consumption) when OPEC raised their prices.

mmi16:

Coal is the only source of energy that is not controlled by the Middle East. With Crude Oil approaching $100 a barrel, coal is only source of engergy that is available without bowing to Mecca and tiething to Islam.

With the expanding economies of India and China, there needs to be increasing levels of enviornmental controls brought to bear on those economies as are in place for the US, Western Europe and Japan, ie. the First World economies.

JP:

"Unless you get policies to put a price on carbon dioxide and other emissions,"

No, but a consumer in New Hampshire or Michigan that faces $600-$700 heating bills between Nov and March may consider heating his home with coal if oil and natural gas costs will remain permanently high. If Congress continues to enact laws, regulations, and policies that add thousands of dollars to the electorate's cost of living, there will be a major turn-over in Congress no matter what thier party affiliation is.

Weather Channel Founder: Global Warming Greatest Scam in History

"There is no run away climate change. The impact of humans on climate is not catastrophic. Our planet is not in peril. I am incensed by the incredible media glamour, the politically correct silliness and rude dismissal of counter arguments by the high priest of Global Warming. In time, a decade or two, the outrageous scam will be obvious."

Rick Ressler:

Coal has always been an economical source of energy. It has been demonized by the environmental activists and the AGW alarmists. CO2 is not a pollutant and poses no threat to the climate, that's just a poorly conceived theory. Coal does contain other elements that can be harmful to air quality if not controlled but modern coal burning plants have done this successfully. Reply: Unfortunately, there are still way too many un-modernized plants still operating.

A few years ago there was a move by environmentalists to get congress to pass a law that would make it more difficult for power plants to use coal. The boogeyman they used to scare people was mercury. They made claims about how coal fired power plants were putting so much mercury into the environment that it was affecting children's health and causing low birth weights in newborns. It wasn't true and there was not one confirmed case of mercury poisoning from coal-fired power plants. Thankfully, congress did not fall for the ruse.

The founder of the Weather Channel, that bastion of global warming hysteria, has come out declaring man-made global warming is "Greatest Scam in History." Of course, the liberal media will simply ignore this story, but I would expect AccuWeather to pick it up because it will help their business. How about it Brett? Here is the link to the story:

Patrick Henry:

Andrew,

People in India and China want to live well, have good jobs and raise their families in prosperity. This requires cheap energy.

The thing that many western Europeans and Americans don't understand about places like Russia, China, and India is that (unlike us) they are very hungry for a good life and do not take prosperity for granted. They are not interested in global warming and are not going to commit economic suicide over liberal guilt. I have a lot of Russian friends and they think Americans have lost their minds. The President of Poland has said that he thinks Al Gore is "insane." Putin has publicly stated that he hopes the climate warms up in Russia.

The coal is going to get sold and is going to get burned. The only way to stop this is to develop inexpensive, non-polluting energy technologies.

REPLY: GOOD! Let's hope it stays that way. As coal is lifes blood for many in the part of the country where I live. It becomes increasingly puzzling to me how coal miners, especially unionized coal miners continue to vote for people like the cry baby Gore (Translation: Democrats who are supposedly for the working man, the oppressed, the downtrotten, etc.) when they constantly throw them under the bus with stupidity like this. But then again, there is no accounting for brainwashing from the unions either. Go Coal! And to Al Gore, PLEASE LEAVE THE COUNTRY FOREVER!!!!

It never ceases to amaze me how someone like Patrick supported nuclear power until they decided to do some uranium mining in his backyard. Now, all of a sudden, he is against nuclear power. A few months ago, he claimed that liberals killed nuclear power, as shown in the link below. I've haven't seen a bigger flip-flopper since Rudy Guiliani.

http://global-warming.accuweather.com/2007/07/researcher_says_renewable_ener_1.html#comment-13457

Regarding India and China, most of the world's increase in energy usage will be coming from there, and if we are going to focus on nuclear power, we should focus on encouraging nuclear power in those two countries. We are working on a nuclear agreement with India. Only problem is that nuclear entails a huge up-front cost and it takes up to twenty years just to get a plant online.

Oil is primarily a transportation fuel, coal is mostly used for electricity -- since the world's energy demands have risen by approximately 20%, coal use has likewise risen by about 20%. In other words, coal usage would have dramatically increased anyway, irrespective of the price of oil. Oil isn't used much for electricity anyway, so I don't see how it has much influence on the demand for coal.

Thanks for the link to the brainwashing of our youth. Really scary. Guess that with the impending catastrophe of AGW, what's the point of learning the three "R's"?

Say, I would be quite cautious about toting out bible versus to make a point. Not saying the bible is right or wrong but I think that there are a number of ways that each and every verse can be interpreted. That is either by the design of the glory of God or manipulation of the men that penned it.

What a mess. The misunderstanding and dramatization of GW by the general public is astounding.

Wonder whatever happened to the fear of acid rain from coal? Better yet, does anyone think that even a single plant in China or India have scrubbers to address acid rain?

rbnyc:

This is off topic so I apologize but I am very curious for an answer.

From what I can tell, the recorded low temp in Central Park this morning was 35 degrees yet four blocks away the rooftop next to mine had a very much glazed over patch of ice on it. This was real ice, not slightly crystallized, so it obviously hit at least 32 or even a bit lower last night. Would a rooftop at night not be an accurate place to gauge temperature?

Reply: A rooftop is not a good spot to measure temperature. The best spot is away from buildings and facing north at a height of 5 feet above the ground. Preferably in a temperature shelter, but most of us do not have that, so you do what you can.

Jim Arndt:

Hi Guys,

Where to begin. Let see it has come full circle from the day of Margret Thacher (UK PM) and her plan to get rid of the coal union monopoly and push nuclear. This is where all of the CO2 madness started. It has been and will be a way to try to control energy and society and not about global warming. It is a way to keep third world countries poor and controllable. They would let millions die before granting the third world countries their right to develop. Some in this country don't like our society so they try AWG to make us weaker and the people outside the US want the same thing. The great evil USA. Thus you have a movement not unlike the DDT scare which never was a problem and now malaria kills millions a year because of an ill conceived movement. But thats just my opinion.

Patrick Henry:

Mark,

I never supported nuclear power. The post you linked to I was pointing out the hypocrisy of liberals. They killed nuclear power and now they want it back. I think uranium mining and nuclear waste disposal are both very dangerous activities. There are thousands of tons of nuclear waste piled up in Al Gore's home state because no one knows what to do with it. Large areas of the southwest has already been rendered unsafe by uranium mining.

Again, you seem unable to distinguish between a reference to an idea and an endorsement of that idea. Very one-dimensional.

RICH:

Patrick is against nuclear power???

Darren, what a mess indeed. All of this back and forth between believers and skeptics isnt going to solve anything. Only time will tell who was right and who was wrong. Unfortunately, we learn nothing from the future. The bible does however give clues to those that are wise enough to read and understand it.

For me, an independent conservative, I know that the earth is not in peril because of AGW. However, the AGW hysteria is helping to raise awareness that we need to cut our ties to foreign oil and that we need to begin implementing energy efficienct technology. Of course there is a negative side effect to this hysteria. Look at Al Gore. Scary.

Im still on the lookout for a presidential candidate who will implement alternative energy technology (nuclear, solar, hydrogen, etc) and will reduce our dependence on foreign oil by opening up our own resources. One who pledges to keep taxes low and disagrees with carbon credits. One who truly believes in God. A president that will create work visas for illegals AND secure our borders. One that doesnt have ties to special interests and lobbyists. OK, the last one is a stretch. (Reply: yea, I'll say.)Does anyone fit this bill? Maybe we can use cloning technology to create a hybrid president. Just kidding.

I cant believe Im gonna say this, but John McCain may be that person?

Oiznop:

I've haven't seen a bigger flip-flopper since Rudy Guiliani.

REPLY: Hey Marko! Looks like your memory needs refreshed! How about a certain swift boat Senator from Taxachusetts that ran for President in '04? oh well, bla bla bla, that doesn't count!! Of course not.....

They killed nuclear power and now they want it back.

REPLY: Yep! Back in the 70's during TMI and Jane Fonda and her propaganda film with Michael Douglas and Jack Lemon. There is just no satisfying these people, Patrick! That's why we need to turn a deaf ear to them and their constant radical BS, especially when public policy is involved!

Save the planet from hot air. MUZZLE JANE FONDA!!!!!

Patrick Henry:

RICH,

Nuclear power proponents tend to focus on the power plant itself, and be oblivious the environmental impact of uranium mining and nuclear waste transport and disposal. I've worked with both of those industries. No one knows how to contain nuclear waste for 20,000 years. Uranium mining is dangerous to the miners and to the people near by. The Nunn mine is particularly dangerous because of it's proximity to shallow water tables and nearby urban areas.

Thomasfurbs:

Just a question about nuclear power. I really don't know much about it, but I do know that we have many nuclear Navy ships and we never hear about any problems with them. Can anyone adress this?

Darren:

Not sure I like any of the choices for President either. I do know this, it is far too early to be overly concerned by it. I'm guessing that their real positions will become more known early next year. Right now, they are just ignoring their day jobs if they have them. I mean at least several are sitting senators right? Shouldn't they be doing senator stuff rather than campaigning?

I wish the country would implement a policy in which they could only campaign one month before the primary and 4 months prior to the election.

BrooklineTom:

Hey Marko! Looks like your memory needs refreshed! How about a certain swift boat Senator from Taxachusetts that ran for President in '04? oh well, bla bla bla, that doesn't count!! Of course not.....

If Oiznop can ever get his attention to the PRESENT, he might want to take a look at Mitt Romney. All that "flip-flop" rhetoric from the Kerry campaign could prove very embarrassing to the GOP if Mr. Romney becomes the nominee. Talk about blow-back. I can hear the spots now: "Gay Rights: First I was for them and now I'm against them", "Women's choice: First I was for it and now I'm against it", "Residence: "First I lived in Utah, but now I live in Massachusetts, except when I live in New Hampshire" -- and on and on and on.

Go Coal!

Spoken like a true old-time Pittsburgh Republican. I guess Oiznop wants to return to the good-old days when men had to change shirts two or more times a day because of the smoke. At my alma mater, near Schenley Park, the night sky of the early 1970s was frequently lit in flickering blue, purple, orange, and red tints -- courtesy of J&L steel. Have another Iron City, Oiznop.

Pittsburgh was, for much of its history, described as "HELL WITH THE LID TAKEN OFF". Just the kind of place Oiznop and our contrarians seem to like. Just the kind of place that I, and perhaps others, cite as an example of how far we've come and what we need to avoid.

mmi16:

Want to be a multi-billionaire?

Invent a commercial process that takes Nuclear Powerplant waste as it's raw input to generate a commercially valuable product or material.

When crude oil was discovered and began to be refined into oil that was use for lighting purposes and replaced whale oil in the marketplace it had this unusable waste product....gasoline. I have no idea who, or when someone will come up with at process that turns nuclear waste into a commercially valuable product....but it will occur! And when it occurs, Nuclear power generation will be the way to go.

simon:

Brett
Have you noticed the steep increase just about everything? Reply: Yes, especially my grocery bill.

The American dollar has weakened making its exports in coal a great deal cheaper against other competitors or alternative energy

It should be celebrated, increased pollution causing an increase in cancers developing big profits for pharmaceutical companies that are dependant on mining industries for the raw materials to keep the customers alive. A self supporting modern day economic miracle, who needs a god?.

Will cigerette companies profit from a cure for cancer if they fund research?

Why should anyone think there will be a decrease in the demand for fossil fuels if there were more clean energy alternatives?

France and Japan developed nuclear power to satisfy energy demand without using coal. Both nations were successful in the first part, but the same amount of coal is still burnt by both nations as before. Turns out cheap coal was just made available for other industries to satisfy increasing consumer demands

Was there a decrease in the demand for wood when coal was discovered?

Certainly not, the economic growth generated by coal increased the demand for ships for transport, timber for mining building and encouraged the deforestation of 60% of the worlds ancient forests by 1950 to supply the factories when the age of consumption finally developed no apparent limits.

The apparent limit is availablity of traditional fuels which can be overcome by the introduction of alternative energy.

The advantage of clean energy is that nations starved of conventional fuels will be able to extract energy from natures renewable resources. Unfortunately for Al Gore this will also increase their demand for other products of consumerism obtained by traditional methods

Alternative energy just represent more energy which encourages more demand increasing economic dependency on every thing else that is available to satisfy an inevitable increase in consumer demand.

RICH:

PH, I understand your concerns. However, at the present, they seem to be the least of our problems. Perhaps overtime, the technology will be there for safer transportation and disposal of waste. BT had some suggestions, maybe he will chime in?

Darren, I agree. If you are campaigning for president, then quit your day job. This NH voter needs to decide soon.

Thomasfurbs, I was so proud seeing our nuclear powered vessels when I was in the military. The ingenuity and innovation of this country is a great thing. We can build the most advanced nuclear powered submarine in the world, but we cannot build a virtual foot bridge to unite this divided country. Congressional approval rating...11 percent. Sad and strange times.
