« Joe Bastardi Interview Part II | Main | Antarctica Spared, Arctic Devastated by GW, New IPCC report will say »

November 5, 2007

Polar Trips becoming Popular

It seems like a lot of people are suddenly making trips to the polar regions of the earth. We recently had a large group of U.S. Senators and IPCC scientists go to Greenland. Remember that guy who went swimming in the arctic. Survivorman just had an episode from Labrador, while Man vs. Wild has been to Alaska and Iceland I recall. The NBC Today show is currently doing live broadcasts from opposite ends of the earth with Matt Lauer in Greenland and Ann Curie in Antarctica. We even had the NBC Sunday night football set go dark for the sake of energy conservation during the Dallas/Philadelphia game. Supposedly, the amount of power the studio saved was equivalent to the amount of energy an average household uses in one month.

I also came across this very interesting article from The Telegraph. In the article, explorer David Hempleman-Adams talks first hand about his recent expedition to Baffin Island, located within the Arctic Circle and the evidence of climate change that he and the locals have experienced. It is worth the read, no matter what your views on climate change are.

Yeah, we were watching the Eagles get clipped when the halftime show came on. I don't think the announcers were taking the lights out very seriously, a lot of chuckles and Chris with his rendition of the Adams Family theme song. But the really funny thing and which caused us to fall off the couch laughing so hard was when Matt Lauer came on and started talking about the "great minds of climate change" and then immediately mentioned Al Gore. Anyway, how are all these "stars" and other travelers getting to the polar regions of the earth, perhaps using solar powered planes? Or electric helicopters?

Patrick Henry:

When you are looking for a pre-conceived conclusion, you will probably find it. The author compared vs. a single data point he made ten years ago.

Problem is that NOAA says that Baffin Bay has been getting colder and icier.

some parts of the Arctic (e.g., western Greenland and Baffin Bay) have been getting colder in recent decades, and increasing concentrations of sea ice in these regions may be too much of a good thing

http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/06arctic/background/edu/purpose.html

The Telegraph author says It was -22C and I risked frostbite and yet he is worried about "global warming". Weird. Reminds me of the story of the Emperor's New Clothes.

Oiznop:

Yep. The Propaganda Machine that is the biased, agenda driven mainstream media continues to spew their garbage, in their eternal desparation. Just last night, those buffones on NBC News devoted approximately 10 minutes on, yet again, the polar bears and how we have to do this and that as a "start" to save the species. It made me want to puke and watch those bloody Patriots win over Indy! What a CROCK!!!!

Save the planet from hot air. MUZZLE (MS)NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST AND AIR AMERICA RADIO!!!!!!!!

Andrew:

Interesting article in the Telegraph, but how do they figure that Easter falls in Winter?

Anyhow, click on the google map link at the end of the article to see what part of Baffin Island they crossed and it's relationship to the rest of the Arctic.

Also, the photo and audio commentary were very good.

From a climate perspective, noticed that there were cumulus clouds towards the end of the trip. Cumulus clouds are a sign of much warmer weather compared to the deep blue skies that they had at the beginning of the trip. Apparently, in just the 10 days they were there, the weather was transitioning rapidly from winter like weather to much warmer conditions.

Would be curious to know just how warm it got there this past summer. Obviously, it has been warm enough to support fresh water fishing.

Marie:

The southern tip of Greenland has a climate similar to northern Scotland. The northern tip of the Antarctic Penninsula has a climate similar to southern Argentina.

Instead of people pretending they are roughing it in the Arctic, they should go to places in Greenland where it is currently -61F, and show us how tough they are fending off the horrors of global warming.

Looks like a beautiful sunny day up there on their web cam. Frostbite in about five seconds in the stiff breeze.

JayByrd:

I was also watching halftime of Sunday Night football, as the hosts looked rather sheepish in NBC's ridulous stunt. If I didn't know any better, I would have thought it was a parody, some sort of satire on global warming hysteria.

Of course, a wonderful and ironic response to this nonsense would have been if everyone watching the game decided to turn off their TV for the rest of the game as a way of showing we got the message and were going to do our part in saving energy. I'm sure the second-half advertisers would have loved that!

sammy k:

i thought the game was excellent...i think the idea of conservation of energy is excellent, except watching football in the dark was kind of interesting, especially seeing the announcers chuckling how stupid it was...also, more nuclear power and burning of the u.s 200 year supply of coal as well as oil and gas exploration in all of U.S. territory without interference from the green boneheads is a good idea because AGW is frankly, a scam...energy independence is infinitely more preferable than sending our sons to fight foreign wars protecting fuel supplies like the not in my back yard green crowd wants to do...i thought it was amusing the outcome of the game foreshadowed the future of the AGW scam...Oil and methane spewing cow town puts a whipping on green freedom bird...too bad the AGW'rs think being free means your free to impose idiotic ideas upon the rest of us by playing make believe with sensational reporting out of some igloo (what a joke and how shallow it came across)...it was unfortunate that it wasnt snowing in philadelphia last night, like Gore's last big hodown on global warming in st louis...that would have been priceless...

Darren:

Ummm...How exactly does the ice melt when all of the temps discussed in the article are well below freezing?

I noted he described a balmy day in Baffin as being -15C or 5 F. By my layman's calcs, that is a mere 27 F below the freezing point of water. How does this whole melt thing work again?

I can tell you this much, several days of 5 F around here freezes the crap out of everything such that it is a major pain in the rear. Cannot imagine 5 F as being described as balmy.

Patrick Henry:

The earth must be taking Tylenol, as it's fever is going down fast. If current trends continue, the average ocean temperature will be below normal in a few weeks.
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/img/climate/research/sst/ani-weekly/5.gif

This despite the fact that the oceans have been boiling in a man made CO2 pressure cooker for the last 50 years. Apparently all the political talk about legislating the climate is starting to reap benefits. The climate must have gotten scared by Barbara Boxer's speeches and is taking self-corrective action. Soon Al Gore will be able to relax, knowing that he has saved the world from the manbearpig.

Patrick Henry:

More bad news for the faithful. Arctic sea ice has increased by 1,000,000 km2 in the last five days. If current trends continue, ice levels will reach normal in two weeks and be close to a record maximum before February. Reply: Patrick, based on those charts, I highly doubt that. Look at the anomaly. But, If you are right, I will certainly note this these words you wrote come February. Brett.

What a terrible time for lefties. Antarctic ice at a record high. The Arctic freezing at a spectacular rate. SST's dropping precipitously. Two quiet hurricane seasons in a row. Democracy taking hold in Iraq - how much worse can it get?

Pretty soon they will have to revert to an impending ice age scare.

JP:

Darren,
Two things to consider as to why ocean temps remain at or above freezing at such a high latitude is the sea surface tempeature, and salinity of the water.

The oceans are just as dynamic as our atmosphere. They work in a 3 dimensional model, which like the atmosphere is largely driven by temperature differences at all layers. Greenland and Iceland coastal areas remain moderately warm due to the advection of warm waters from the subtropics. In this case, it is more important to look at the ocean circulations and thier attendent synoptic scale atmospheric circulations. For the last 10 years, the North Atlantic Basin has acted as a kind of tropical heat engine. It obviously has had plenty of stored heat energy, which in turn travels poleward. SST temp anomolies across the North Atlantic are well above the 30 year average. This residual heat also built a very stubborn high pressure center near the Azores. The record warmth Europe (esp Southern Europe) has seen these last 4 seasons is a result of this high pressure.

The Pacific has seen an even more extensive, longer lasting episode of warm SSTs. Going back to 1976, there have been 4 major, very intense El Nino events (1976, 1983, 1988, 1997). If you looked at the MEI (Multi-variate El Nino Index), you will see elevated MEI numbers for the last decade (discounting weak short lived La Nina events). The Northern Hemisphere has been under the influence of lots of warm tropical waters for at least a decade.

Patrick Henry:

Brett,

I'll not that on my calendar ;^)

Patrick Henry:

JP,

Sea water typically freezes at 28F.

sammy k:

shame shame on you jp, suggesting natural oceanic circulation as cause of ice melt in arctic, which no doubt, also influences the air above it...brett just posted that the International Panel on Climate Conspiracy has it all figured out and says your warm water pattern is all the result of co2...heh, heh, couldnt agree with you more brother about oceanic circulation!!!perhaps we are going about this debate all wrong...i think we should figure out how to post in green, use less energy traveling hyperspace so we rack up the carbon credits, and turn down the white background on this blog so that it looks dark, perhaps then we can start convincing our AGW friends that we too are eco-friendly...if we can figure that out then maybe we could shade the Nobel Peace prize winner into a plump looking GUMBY and shade all us deniers into little GUMBIES whereby we too can go about our daily co2 expelling lives feeling good about ourselves...

I used to watch the 'Today Show' but not anymore. It's now over for them. I standing for the integrity of science.

Bob:

Andrew you really need to lighten up and quit being so pessimistic. You are trying to find a negative in every article that has been on the forum recently. It really isn't as bad as the headlines say. Keep in mind if they don't continue the hype their funding will be turned off. Seriously if you were the IPCC wouldn't you be doing the same.

simon:

I am also getting sick of hearing about these ridiculous stunts. We have a national switch off day, only once a month, to encourage people to switch off appliances. The idea depends on the wrong assumption that if the switch is off, the coal to produce the power is saved and thereby overall there should be a saving of emissions.
Surely everyone knows that electricity is always in oversupply wasting resources causing emissions even if you switch off and live in a tent.
I wonder if fossil fuel use has ever been reduced because people switched off or used green energy, I wonder if power use will ever be reduced .

Here windmills supply 10% of our electricity but even larger amounts of fossil fuels have been burnt over the years to supply the ever increasing demand, therefore windmills and the like only offer more power with no environmental benefits to show for the novelty.

Supporters will point out that if there were no windmills 10% more coal would be have to be burnt releasing 10% more co2, but the introduction of windmills has not reduced increased demand so the original rate of emissions causing AGW has not been affected.

The introduction of green energy does not challenge the original problem and will not reduce the emissions that were enough to cause AGW to begin with.

If larger amounts of power are eventually derived from clean energy it will mean a drop in coal prices as the resource develops a glut, this will benefit cement, steel and other high energy industries located in developing nations as prices for the for the fuel drop. The products and services will offer cheaper prices to global consumers whose demand for more power will increase along with the associated co2 emissions and climate problems.

Ignorance obviously rules, and the less you know the easier it is to accept that the sceptics must be right because they do not support such idiotic plans.

AGWers should unmask these stupid plans for what they are because time is just being wasted by fools who have no idea what to do. The Al Gores will just fidget with the switches and the sceptics fidget with the figures while nothing much happens at all except all things climate related.

Its time to demand low emissions, proven by an actual drop in fossil fuel burning or else the achievements will always be compared with what might have been.

Gary:

Simon:
I am honestly intregued:
Can you, in point form, list just exactly what you would like to see happen.
What do you really think it will take?
Thanks

Paul:

Gary,

Thanks for the excellent video links. I love some of the comments, such as this one:

"....there's nothing scientific about it. It's deliberate and intentional misinterpretation of existing data that MOST people couldn't even begin to understand because they don't have a concrete understanding of science."

Then, they proceed into the personal attacks on Prof. Carter.

Typical.

Gary:

Paul;
Unfortunatly Prof. Carter has recently been seen driving a car.
This obviously puts him squarely under the influence of the Oil and Gas industry and renders all of his comments false.

To bad. He almost made some sense.

Just trying on some standard AGW rebuttles......

Oiznop:

What a terrible time for lefties. Antarctic ice at a record high. The Arctic freezing at a spectacular rate. SST's dropping precipitously. Two quiet hurricane seasons in a row. Democracy taking hold in Iraq - how much worse can it get?

REPLY: Hey Patrick! It looks like our leftist friends are going to get a new supply of prozac to sustain them through all of this bad news! Hearing these things makes my day!!!

Save the planet from hot air. MUZZLE A LIBERAL!!!!

Gabe :

Oiznop:The Arctic freezing at a spectacular rate.

I'd like to see some data on that. Terrible time for lefties? Only a year and Bush will be gone and republicans will be out of white house. Its a great time for us lefties!

Boondocks:

Gabe:
I see, the election is settled, no need to vote.
Typical left wing statement based on in-complete data.

Oiznop:
We don't need to muzzle liberals, we just need to keep them from muzzling everyone else.

Mark:

Patrick,

The record maximum for ice in the Arctic is way above 15 million sq km. I'm also marking my calendar -- if we don't set the record in early March, I'll be pointing and laughing at you.

Patrick Henry:

Mark,

The record maximum for ice in the Arctic is way above 15 million sq km

Actually, it is almost exactly 15,000,000 km2. Reached in 1979 and 1988
http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/current.area.jpg

Gabe,

I already gave the link in my original post, but here it is again. The arctic is freezing up at a rate of 1,000,000 km2 every five days. If it kept up that rate (which it won't) the all-time record would be broken before Christmas.
http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/current.365.jpg

Gabe:

Boondocks:"Typical left wing statement based on in-complete data." I think republicans are more at fault for this then dems.

Patrick Henry: I looked at that chart and all I see is that we are still 2 million square km. below the average. So what if the ice is freezing up fast. We are still way below avg.

Reduce the national debt! Tax the wealthy righties!
