Did the New Solar Cycle just begin?
I recently (Dec 6th) blogged about the Sun's inactivity and how it could counteract global warming. At that time, there was still no signs of the new incoming cycle 24. Well, according to NASA, it appears that Cycle 24 might have started on December 11th.
"New solar cycles always begin with a high-latitude, reversed polarity sunspot," explains David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center. "Reversed polarity" means a sunspot with opposite magnetic polarity compared to sunspots from the previous solar cycle. "High-latitude" refers to the sun's grid of latitude and longitude. Old cycle spots congregate near the sun's equator. New cycle spots appear higher, around 25 or 30 degrees latitude.

Last Tuesday, a small region appeared in the higher altitudes of the sun (shown on the image above) and it was magnetically reversed, but there was no sunspot. If the fields coalesce into a dark sunspot, then scientists will declare that Solar Cycle 24 has officially begun, according to the Science@NASA article.
Latest image of the sun today still does not show any sunspots in the higher latitudes, at least from what I can tell.

Hi Guys,
Note he says "could be" the start of a new cycle. From Brett's post on sun spots "The first stirrings of cycle 24 were supposed to arrive a year ago, then NOAA predicted it for March 2007, now they say March of 2008. The first indications that the Sun is emerging from its current sunspot minimum will be the appearance of small spots at high latitude. They usually occur some 12-20 months before the start of a new cycle." These are not spots but I quote "Last Tuesday, a small region appeared in the higher altitudes of the sun (shown on the image above) and it was magnetically reversed, but there was no sunspot." So until the spots appears in the right place it will then be 12-20 months before the cycle begins. Nothing more to read into this other than a "could be" case.

AAAHHHHH!!!!
Et Tu, Sol?
I just have to wonder how this development will be blamed upon the dreaded SUV. Or maybe it is the general resistance of using the little coil light thingies.
Now we're doomed, extra people heat AND more sun activity.
LOL

Has anybody noticed that cryosphere today has lost its 2006-2007 NH data
http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/current.365.jpg
and that climate audit has crashed?
http://www.climateaudit.org
there probably a reasonable explanation for both. However, in the light of this previous problem:
http://mikelm.blogspot.com/2007/09/left-image-was-downloaded-from.html
it might be wise to audit

Solar cycles usually take a few years to build to a frenzy and Cycle 24 will be no exception. "We still have some quiet times ahead," says Hathaway.
Bad news for the faithful. After freezing all winter under a quiet sun, enthusiasm for turning control of the US over to the UN will be harder to come by. Too much ice on the streets for the AGW protesters.

Just back from vacation in sunny, WARM Florida to find a total of about 17 inches of snow on the ground. Boston and detroit are having a top ten December (still 2 weeks to go) as far as snow totals. 9 deaths as a result from this past winter storm.
Everyone having a good winter? Obviously not, winter hasnt even started yet. Its still fall, yet half this country is buried under snow and ice.
Found this at our local Sierra Club web site:
"unless we take steps NOW to curb GLOBAL WARMING, our way of life, our planet, and our children are all in grave danger."
Clearly, more garbage from the loonies. Oh, walking through the airport, I saw a nice stop global warming sign, paid for by the Sierra Club. It was 15 degrees outside. This cold is costing me more than any warmth would. I dont see NY city submerged anytime soon.
Funny how all that melted arctic ice this summer has created a cooling effect isnt it. Guess what, the freezer is on full blast right now. Snickers should film their next commercial in the arctic. Not going anywhere for a while?

Solar variation is generally discounted by the IPCC as an important factor in temperature variations because the mechanisms are complex, yet it is difficult to argue with empirical data. The entire southern hemisphere is looking at a cold summer, and much of the northern hemisphere has dropped below normal as well.

Awww man, and the Denial Machine told us that this cycle was going to be extremely delayed and that we might be heading into another Maunder Minimum!
LOL
Oh well, I'm sure they'll blame it on Iran or those darn Communists. How dare they wake up the Sun.

Hansen's "Super El Nino" hits Canada.
Ottawa residents and snow removal crews continue to dig out from a record-breaking snowfall.
"You can brag to the grandchildren that you lived through the biggest snowfall ever ever in Ottawa," said Environment Canada meteorologist David Phillips.
In total, 37 cms was reported to have fallen in the weekend storm. That sets a record for the most snow in a single December day since Environment Canada started keeping records in 1938.

During the winter of an El Nino event, the air temperature tends to be warm over most of Canada... Southern Canada also tends to be drier during an El Nino winter

Hansen's a genius, and he's quick to admit it when he's wrong - though that certainly never happens.

"Everyone having a good winter? Obviously not, winter hasnt even started yet. Its still fall, yet half this country is buried under snow and ice."
Rich, in the meteorological community, December, January and February are the three winter months. People who consider astronomical winter as true "winter" are those who don't know a thing about the weather (i.e. most of the general public).
It's winter, and it's been winter for a couple weeks now.

Impressive rainfall in Australia so far this month.
ftp://ftp.bom.gov.au/anon/home/ncc/www/rainfall/totals/cmonth/colour/latest.gif
Their drought is disappearing and the drought in the western US is fading fast. Massive snow cover in the northern hemisphere and record sea ice in the southern hemisphere.
Perhaps the inactive sun really does have something to do with the climate? Maybe someone should tell the UN, before they impose worldwide socialism on a marvelously brainwashed populace.

Record Snow in Toronto. In a statement from Bali, Al Gore warned: "if Canada did not immediately change its ways, it would be hit with more winter storms."
Gore added that climate models showed that global warming would lead to more Canadian snowfall or less snowfall or about the same amount of snowfall or all three and that the need for change was urgent.
Stephen McIntyre of Climate Audit was unable to comment because he was shoveling his driveway.

Being the radio amateur that I am, I have been praying for this! Because when the sunspots are churning, radio propagation mushrooms! And you can easily send a signal over the horizon into many parts of the world using a low powered radio transmitter and a small (wire) antenna! I really hope it has started, however, in "ham" radio circles, I have been hearing that these are just blips on the radar, and that the previous cycle has yet to bottom out. The latest I heard is that this spring, Cycle 23 is supposed to hit bottom. It seems like it's taking forever to do so. The peak is predicted for 2012. I am not so sure I can wait that long!!!...:-D....Also, I have been told that this upcoming cycle is supposed to be a huge one. Here's hoping it is so the radio conditions improve, and (brace yourself Mark and BT) THE EARTH WARMS NICELY!!!!.....ROFLMAO!!!!!!...On a day like today, I could sure use it!
I'd rather sweat and swelter than shovel, shiver, slip, slide and scrape!...BRING ON THE GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!

12 below zero in upstate New York to tie the record low. We have already set some lows this year. If the earth has warmed, record highs should be more and more common and record lows should be more and more rare. That's not what I'm feeling.

The US is the largest exporter of food, and the agriculture sector is the single largest producer of greenhouse gases. Now the UN says that the world food supply is dwindling. The Bali agreement will cause mass starvation, which is probably what greens are looking for.
In an "unforeseen and unprecedented" shift, the world food supply is dwindling rapidly and food prices are soaring to historic levels, the top food and agriculture official of the United Nations warned Monday.

To Patrick Henry: Hey PH, You're an info kind of guy. Don't know how to set up links cause I'm a bit of a computer ignoramus. But if your willing to use a search engine to find it I think you'll find this info well worth your bother. The Guy's name your looking for is Dr. Rhodes Fairbridge and there are two particular articles of interest. The first is titled "Climate Change By Jupiter" posted by The Financial Post. The other is entitled "Climate and Keplarian Planetary Dynamics" posted by Crawford Perpsectives. These articles tied in real nicely I thought with Brett's blog post on present Solar inactivity. I first ran across this man's material over at Icecap. Tell me what ya think. Best regards.Dave

UnitedMind,
What this weather does prove, once again, is that the climate models don't work very well. Every NOAA CPC prediction this year showed an exceptionally warm winter over almost all of the country.
It is also difficult to rationalize how this can happen in a climate primarily controlled by steadily increasing CO2. The correlation with low solar activity seems rather strong, don't you think?
Posted by Patrick Henry | December 18, 2007 10:41 AM
Brrr, 2 degrees this morning at 43 degrees latitude. The poor polar bears!
Mark, thanks for clarifying. I thought it could only snow after December 21st. I am confident that I have more experience with winter weather than you do. Come look at my buried yard and tell me that I dont know anything about winter weather. Come on up to the northern states. Plead your case to have us pay to STOP global warming, when we are ALREADY PAYING MORE TO STAY WARM. Mark, how about a time frame when NY city will be submerged?
FYI: MOST people I talk to dont give a crap about AGW.
Oiznop. The wheels on the AGW bus may be coming off soon. They are wobbling, like the earth. Good to know Mike and Mike havent been brainwashed by the AGW cult into thinking that we are in peril.
Bring on the warmth! More snow for Wednesday.
BT and Emilliano, the snowmobiling, skiing, skating, etc has been FANTASTIC! Thanks for your fear driven concern.
Posted by RICH | December 18, 2007 11:13 AM
Dave,
Thanks for the link. There is much which isn't understood about the climate. The current cold weather is an unmistakable contradiction to the simplistic view being rammed down our throats by Hansen and the UN.
CO2 is just one variable in the climate equation, not the only one as Al Gore wants us to believe. Most school kids now believe that bad weather never occurred prior to the evil United States destroying the climate.
Posted by Patrick Henry | December 18, 2007 12:25 PM
For those of us who hate popular media AGW alarmism, which includes me, even though I am no denier, beware. Long Range models indicate a shift to zonal flow over the contiguous U.S. Thus expect mild temperatures for the next few weeks. Oiznop, you might get some good mild weather in Pittsburg, so enjoy.

Brett,
You probably have the most significant scientific background here with regard to climate. So, at what point, as moderator and as a scientist, do you step up and respond to those who purposely make posts saying that a cold December in parts of the US somehow shows that the climate isn't changing?
Reply: It doesn't prove anything, just the same if the month was unusually warm. It's just one month. I have said this in the past.
Today's "weather" isn't "climate," and in fact, almost all of these posters--Patrick Henry, I'm pointing at you specifically--are quick to point this fact out at other times when they deny that humans are changing the climate.
My point Brett, is simply that when you sit by and allow the vested interests to spread misinformation, you do anybody who reads your blog in a legitimate attempt to further their understanding of the issue a real disservice.
Posted by GSN | December 18, 2007 2:05 PM
Folks,
A couple of weeks of cold weather doesn't prove anything when it comes to climate. Use science not emotional blabber like the AGWs. Let the AGW crowd spout a littany of nonsense. The rest of us need to use rational thought.
Since 1999 AGW proponents have said we have only a decade to change before the tipping point has been reached. Yet here we are 7 years later and I keep hearing about the 10 year rule, which will have turned into 17. LOL
Question:
Has anybody from either side of this farce come up with concrete "benchmarks" and a time frame on which to prove AGW?
