Dr James Hansen 20 years Later
Dr. James Hansen from NASA's GISS.
![]()
Exactly 20 years to the date that Dr. James Hansen first testified to Congress, the head of NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) updated the House Select Committee on Energy Independence on the status of global warming on Monday.
I included links to his actual speech and his powerpoint presentation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Hansen initially points out some of the flaws from his 1988 testimony.......
--He underestimated that just a small change in the mean has big effects.
--Global warming enhances more intense droughts, heat waves, fires, heavier rainfall, greater floods and stronger storms than what was thought 20 years ago.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today, Dr. Hansen pointed out some of the following (there is more more in his speech).......
--International recognition of global warming has been swift, but actions have faltered.
--There is a gap between what is UNDERSTOOD (science) and what is KNOWN (public).
-- Ominous tipping points loom.
--Atmospheric CO2 levels are now at 385 ppm and rising at a rate of 2 ppm per year. The safe level of atmospheric CO2 is less than 350 ppm in order to preserve creation, the plantet on which civilization developed. We need to get atmospheric CO2 levels down to the following.......
--325-355 ppm to restore planetary cenergy balance.
--300-325 ppm to restore sea ice.
--300-350 ppm to avois ocean acidification.
According to Hansen, these targets are technically feasible, but we must halt construction of any new coal plants that do not capture and store carbon dioxide.
Some of his solutions..........
--Phase out coal carbon dioxide emissions by 2025/2030 in developed and developing countries.
--A rising carbon price.
--Improved soil and biosphere CO2 sequestion
--A carbon tax with a 100% dividend.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hansen points out that the main conflict surrounding global warming and that is........
Fossil fuel special interests vs. young people and nature (animals).
According to Hansen, fossil fuel companies choose to sprea doubt about global warming. They know what they are doing and are aware of long term consequences of continued business as usual. CEO's should be tried for high crimes against humanity and nature. (Wow, that is a strong statement!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
His powerpoint presentation has a lot of interesting charts and is worth the look whether you agree with him or not. I found the global ocean heat content graph on page 15 of interest, since a lot of what I show is just the sea-surface temperature data.

He's a priest in a cult, why anyone listens to him is beyond me.

Ask Hansen why the last 10 years have seen a cooling trend. (Reply: The overall 10-year trend has been upward. Yes, 1998 was warmer than 2007 when comparing those two years alone)Ask him how the Earth naturally flourished since Cambrian times, often with CO2 levels at several THOUSAND ppm.
The guy is a scientist who has made the fatal mistake of falling in love with his AGW hypothethis and its continually re-imagined drastic consequences despite data.

I agree... there is a gap between what is UNDERSTOOD and what is KNOWN.
Did you know that satellite measured global monthly temperature trend from UAH show that it's cooler now than when Hansen made his testimony 20 years ago?
I wonder is Hansen has any connection to George Soros?

Dr. Hansen and his global warming allies have simply not made their case. They were quick to resort to hype, name calling and scare tactics in place of good, credible science. It is not energy company CEO`s who are turning the tide against his movement...instead, it is an enlightened public who can come to a site like this one to learn that AGW is little more than a discredited religion.

The primary flaw from his 1988 testimony is that he was wrong about everything. Temperatures are cooler now than they were twenty years ago.

Brett - I wonder if Hansen would let himself be tried for criminal behaviour if McIntyre or others are able to prove his manipulation of the data.
He fought like the dickens to keep his computer code from the eye of public scrutiny & from this student's perspective that can only be due to his knowledge that the science is a little suspect ( perhaps even out right wrong ).
His rant for oil company execs to go to prison is a bit over the top ... even by Hansen's standards ... what is the penalty for heating your house, driving or eating?? Off to the gulag with all of us.
Be good,
Rick.

Please look at what Hansen considers to be the "main conflict".
Fossil fuel special interests versus young people and nature.
What does that even mean? What about the rest of us who ain't exactly young or "of nature".
What I find more intriguing is a scientist using politically motivated buzz words.
It seems that the good Doctor is more concerned about supposed corporate inequities than science.
I sense an AGENDA here in his argument rather than a concern over the planet.
Interesting that we find out that the "Safe" level is now 350 ppm. I thought I remember him saying some time ago that it was around 250 or so. Can't remember the specifics.
I do like how he now states that GW can "enhance" everything weather in his mind. Sounds like it should be featured in an infomercial instead of be an issue. I can see it now....
"Yes you can have enhanced everything for just 19.99, order your GW now!" "And if you act in the next 10 mins, we'll double your order!"

Brett: Hansen's Ocean Heat Content curve doesn't vary that much from a cropped Global SST Anomaly curve, ending in 2003. (Oh no, SST is rising and we're about to reach a tipping point!) If we let the data go past 2003, the curve isn't so ominous. (We reached the tipping point and SST went down. D'oh.)
I'm 15 posts into my look at Smith and Reynolds SST data available from NOAA's NOMADS. There's a link to the downloading instructions on the following log of my ERSST.v2 posts.

Star Wars: Starring Al Gore as Darth Vader, Dr. Hansen as the Emperor{he has the look} in The Return Of The Hoax. The CEOs for fossil fuel companies should be tried for high crimes. Reply: For what, keeping the country running as the enviromentalcases try to slow it down, really what do people think that keeps everything going, agw ers complain about, drilling for oil, please someone tell me my alternative to get back and forth to work without gas, really I would love to know because I'm sick of buying it, is taxing the oil companies going to eliminate the need for it, NO but it sure puts a few bucks into some lazy mans pocket, but hey this to Barack would be called a job created, maybe some need to get out of the imaginery world and live in the real one. List of AGW ers complaints, oil companies, loggers, farmers, truckers, if you were able to shut these 4 down you would and if that happened tell me then where would your stuff come from, there is probably someone out there thinking.."well I could still walk to the store" no one in the real world thinks this only the ones out there in their imaginery one. Wake up people!

some of the comments made by hansen are frightening, not because of what he has to say about climate change but more about his comments about the idea of criminalizing people who dont believe or conform to his theories. He must be exposed and stopped.

Even if you conclude that serious agw visa vis co2 is bunk, no one can argue that the carbon cycle is in balance, especially where ocean acidification is concerned. Hansen's harsh rhetoric is just what the planet needs. Limiting carbon output is limiting pollution. Hansen's my hero and so is Al Gore.

Only Hansen's GISS shows a slight increase in mean temp for the last 10 years. His data is an outlier. HadCRUT, RSS and UAH show a cooling trend. Hardly the rise in degrees C per century or decade claimed by the computer models.
Reply: Combining most of the sources it still looks like an upward trend when you look at the whole picture from 1979-now, though it is true that there was a pretty good drop in 2007. I will be curious to see what this graph looks like when we get to 2020. http://www.climate4you.com/images/AllCompared%20GlobalMonthlyTempSince1979.gif
Even so, GISS could be right and all the other methods wrong, but a scientist making extroadinary claims requires extraordinary proof. And he should cool the unscientific alarmist rhetoric about AGW causing more storms and floods. Leave that to polemicists like Al Gore.

Yes PH, and the temperatures in the 1950's and 1960's were cooler then they were in the 1930's and 1940's. Does that negate the fact that temperatures now are still above the temperatures in the 1930's and 1940's? I can state pretty confidently that the temperatures now are warmer then they will be in the winter. Short-term cycles have that effect on things.
By the way, since you are back and concentrating in the cooler side of things including the snow cover in the PAC NW recently, I thought I should provide you with a more complete analysis of the snow cover for the entire northern hemisphere since last October:
http://moe.met.fsu.edu/snow/nhtime-1year.png
From what I can tell from that graph, except for the peak period from mid-January to mid-February (that received the big press from ICECAP during that time), the majority of the time showed below normal snow cover relative to the 1996-2005 climatology. That makes your localized snow cover reports relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
By the way, I have not read much about the rest of the snow season from the ICECAP commenters simply because they obviously did not want to show this same graph to their followers like they did back in January and February.

Where's an independent prosecutor when we need one!
By that I mean a truly INDEPENDENT scientific sleuth or group to weigh the truth (or lack of) with regard to:
--Hansen's (GISS)outlying temperature measurements versus the other three that indicate a vastly different temperature trend
--Whether or not CO2 levels precede or FOLLOW temperatures in the ice core record
--A serious look at solar and other influences on Earth's climate

Wow, this sounds like a statement from BT. I guess if you are a meteorologist and don't agree with Hansen you should be fired and maybe serve jail time. This is just getting so ridicuolus, but I will say very entertaining. Seems like a great circus act now at best.

Josh Brenneman,
Love the Stars Wars connection to all this! That was good... Hansen also said "Young People: need to organize, enlist others (parents, e.g.), impact elections" he is trying to turn our youth over to the dark side...
As for 350 ppm being "safe" is completely made up in the minds of the AGW crowd. In the past C02 has been up to 7000 ppm and ice ages happened at 4000 ppm. According to David Archibald: "The effect of carbon dioxide on temperature is logarithmic and thus climate sensitivitydecreases with increasing concentration. The first 20 ppm of carbon dioxide has a greater temperature effect than the next 400 ppm. The rate of annual increase in atmosphericcarbon dioxide over the last 30 years has averaged 1.7 ppm."

Planet of the Apes: or Skeptics:
Infrared radiation reaches the earth as an electromagnetic wavelength. Than the heat is taken up by water vepour, to the troposphere. The energy of the IR is transferred to the CO2 molecules causing them to tumble faster, and this causes other gases in the troposphere by the collisions. Then they move faster. This is commonly called warmer. Then the water vapour comes round and the rest of the heat is trapped, commonly called the greenhouse effect. Human activity has caused an increase of CO2 by foosil fuels. Science 101.

I'm getting so sick of this "tipping point" nonsense. Isn't it convenient how doomsday is always just around the corner? ACTUAL measured CO2 levels PRIOR to the Industrial Revolution exceeded today's levels, and probably Hansen's "tipping point" as well (what's the latest? - I'm sure it's had several upward revisions, since the levels keep climbing and the climate refuses to do anything dramatic), and yet no climate catastrophe ensued. Hopefully Congress is actually getting some input from those with alternative viewpoints, as well - and hopefully they're asking him some tough questions about the fact that none of his doomsday predictions seem to pan out.
